Social worker’s role in the UVA Emergency Department

“How can I help?” may be the most common question social workers ask in the Emergency Department. The social worker role in the ED is varied and multifaceted. ED visits are often filled with fear, anxiety and the unknown.

Social workers provide supportive counseling to patients as well as patients’ loved ones. They help with coping, grief and emotional support during difficult or traumatic situations. When needed, social workers can also assist with communication between family members and the medical team.

In addition, social workers provide clinical expertise in the areas of domestic violence, child and elder abuse and neglect. On a daily basis, social workers address patient needs and issues such as homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and food/shelter. One of the local resources that social workers connect patients and families with are the drug addiction and behavioral health services at Region Ten.

While working at Region Ten, she attained her status as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

Jackie has since been with the UVA Emergency Department for the past seven years. She is interested in trauma therapy and the impact of body trauma on mental health.
