In 1995, UVA’s Board of Visitors formally recognized Emergency Medicine as a separate department in the School of Medicine. The first chairman of the department, Dr. Marcus Martin, had a vision for the future of medical education.

EMCERT (Emergency Medicine Center for Education, Research and Technology) was founded in 2000 to support emergency medicine research, education, and the use of technology to improve patient care. EMCERT has been a catalyst in the growth of the Medical Simulation Center as well as the department’s Division of Medical Toxicology and the Blue Ridge Poison Control Center.
